Greenland leader says Trump remains determined despite ruling out force
Trump has advocated for American control over Greenland, citing national security concerns related to Russian and Chinese interests
NUUK, Greenland (MNTV) – Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated that despite President Trump’s pledge against using military means to acquire Greenland, he perceives no fundamental shift in the American president’s desire to control the Arctic territory.
Trump has advocated for American control over Greenland, citing national security concerns related to Russian and Chinese interests. He previously threatened sanctions against European nations opposing the takeover of the Danish territory.
Following discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the Davos World Economic Forum, Trump withdrew those threats, claiming a framework for arrangements involving Greenland and the broader Arctic was established.
However, Nielsen told parliament in Nuuk on Monday that Trump’s fundamental position regarding Greenland and its population remains unchanged.
“Overall, the message and objective are clear: Greenland must be taken over and governed by the US,” Nielsen said, according to Danish broadcaster DR. “Unfortunately, this remains valid and unchanged.”
Negotiations between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland began last week to address the crisis.
