Israeli attacks kill 6 Palestinian students in Gaza in 2 days: Ministry
Two young schoolgirls were also injured by Israeli gunfire at a school in northern Gaza, raising fresh concerns over student safety as classroom learning resumes
GAZA (MNTV) – At least six Palestinian students have been killed and several others injured in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip over the past two days, the Palestinian Education Ministry said Wednesday.
The ministry also reported that two schoolgirls were wounded when Israeli military vehicles opened fire on a school and nearby areas in Jabalia, northern Gaza.
The injured students were identified as Souad Qandil, a sixth grader, and Amna Khaled Ali Khader, who is in fourth grade.
According to the ministry, Souad sustained a gunshot wound to her thigh and underwent surgery, while Amna suffered injuries to her abdomen.
No additional information was released about their medical conditions. The ministry also did not specify where the six other students had been killed.
The latest casualties come just weeks after Gaza’s schools reopened for in-person learning on Sept. 19, ending nearly three years of widespread disruption caused by Israel’s genocidal war on the Palestinian enclave.
The ministry described the shootings as part of a continuing escalation of Israeli attacks affecting Palestinian children and educational institutions.
It warned that repeated violence near schools was threatening efforts to restore an education system already devastated by years of Israeli bombardment.
“Schools should be safe places for learning, not arenas of fear, injury and death,” the ministry said.
It stressed that attacks on students violate their fundamental right to education and further endanger children attempting to return to normal classroom activities.
The ministry urged the United Nations, international human rights organizations and other relevant bodies to take immediate steps to protect students and teachers.
It also called for an end to attacks targeting schools and surrounding areas, alongside accountability for those responsible.
Despite widespread destruction, Palestinian education authorities have been working to restore schooling for approximately 541,000 students during the new academic year.
The ministry said nearly 700 physical learning locations are expected to accommodate students, supplemented by online education programs.
Gaza’s education infrastructure has suffered extensive damage since Israel launched its genocidal war in October 2023.
The Israeli offensive has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians and injured over 175,000 others, while approximately 90% of the enclave’s civilian infrastructure has been destroyed.
