Global calls for restraint as India and Pakistan seek to de-escalate tensions
Global powers urge India and Pakistan to de-escalate as tensions risk spiraling into broader conflict
NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD (MNTV) – In the wake of heightened military exchanges between India and Pakistan, international leaders have intensified diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
Both nations, equipped with nuclear capabilities, have hinted at a willingness to reduce tensions following the recent hostilities.
The global calls for restraint followed Pakistan’s launch of “Operation Bunyan Ul Marsoos,” a large-scale retaliatory operation in response to Indian missile strikes earlier this week on Pakistani territory that resulted in numerous civilian casualties.
Those initial strikes, dubbed “Operation Sindoor” by India, were reportedly aimed at what New Delhi termed “terrorist infrastructure” in Pakistan.
Saudi Arabia has emerged as a key mediator, with Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud engaging in phone calls with his Indian and Pakistani counterparts.
According to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussions with India’s S. Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Ishaq Dar centered on promoting calm and halting further confrontations.
“The kingdom reaffirms its commitment to the region’s security and stability while maintaining close, balanced relations with both countries,” the Saudi statement noted.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged direct communication between the two neighbors, offering Washington’s assistance in facilitating dialogue.
In separate calls with Jaishankar and Dar, Rubio stressed the importance of finding mechanisms to de-escalate the crisis.
“Both sides need to prioritize re-establishing direct communication to avoid miscalculation,” said State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.
China, which maintains strategic ties with Pakistan and a complicated relationship with India, has also expressed concern. T
he Chinese Foreign Ministry urged both nations to prioritize “peace and stability” and resolve disputes through political channels. Beijing added that it is prepared to play a constructive role in diffusing tensions.
The G7 countries issued a collective call for restraint and dialogue, echoing sentiments from Russia, Malaysia, and Iran.
These nations emphasized the importance of avoiding actions that could provoke a broader conflict, given the region’s volatility.
Despite the heated exchanges, the tone from both India and Pakistan suggests a desire to prevent a prolonged conflict.
Global powers continue to advocate for dialogue and de-escalation, underlining the risks of any misstep in the current standoff.
