Chuck Schumer condemns US president’s clemency for Hernandez
Hernández, sentenced 45 years for facilitating a trafficking conspiracy, was released from prison after receiving a presidential pardon
WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) – U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer sharply criticized President Donald Trump for granting clemency to former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, calling the decision “disgusting” and “dangerous.”
Hernández, sentenced in 2024 to 45 years for facilitating a massive cocaine-trafficking conspiracy, was released from prison this week after receiving a presidential pardon.
Schumer said the move represents a profound contradiction in Trump’s stated commitment to fighting drug cartels.
He pointed out that Hernández helped move more than 400 tons of cocaine into the United States while in office, yet was freed by an administration that claims to champion law-and-order policies.
“You can’t have it both ways,” Schumer said, arguing that the pardon undermines U.S. efforts against transnational crime.
He used the decision to highlight what he described as a broader pattern of troubling behavior from the White House, calling the clemency “egregious, shameful and dangerous—even for Donald Trump.”
The pardon raises diplomatic questions about Washington’s credibility in Latin America, where partners rely on U.S. consistency in combating drug trafficking networks.
