From business and arts to sports and community service, Australian Muslim Achievement Awards honor community heroes
SYDNEY, Australia (MNTV) — Professor Samina Yasmeen, a renowned academic and community leader, was recognized at the 17th Annual Australian Muslim Achievement Awards (AMAA) for her outstanding contributions to education and community service.
Her dedication to promoting cross-cultural understanding and social justice has made a lasting impact on the community.
The AMAA ceremony, held at the Sydney Opera House, celebrated outstanding achievements from Australian Muslims across various fields, reports Australian Muslim Times.
Organized by Mission of Hope and supported by Hejaz Finance, the AMAA honored a diverse range of individuals and organizations whose work spans community service, activism, health, business, media, sport, and the arts.
“This gathering is not a distraction. It is resistance,” said Hanan Dover, founder of Mission of Hope, emphasizing the importance of celebrating Muslim excellence while acknowledging the struggles faced by the community.
The recipients included:
– Business of the Year: Birchgrove Legal, recognized for their strong business model and community service.
– Creative Artist of the Year: Khaled Sabsabi, who dedicated his award to supporters of artists, affirming: “Our voice will not be silenced and truths will be told.”
– Lifetime Achiever: Bilal Cleland, who stressed the need for confidence in Islam, the ability to defend its ideas with evidence, and openness to constructive engagement.
– Professional of the Year: Dr. Mohammed Awad, who dedicated the award to healthcare professionals in Gaza, calling them “the true professionals” for working unpaid, tirelessly, and with integrity under siege.
– Sportsperson of the Year: Tina Rahimi, Australia’s first hijab-wearing boxer, who hoped her award would encourage others to chase their dreams despite barriers.
– Youth of the Year: Khadijah Habbouche, who described the emotional resonance of sharing her 18th birthday with her grandfather’s 77th — both born on Nakba Day.
– Woman of the Year: Dr. Bushra Othman, who reflected on her medical missions to Gaza and her hope to see a free Palestine in her lifetime.
