Blurring the Line Between Cops and Criminals!
Breaking News: After a week of turmoil within Toronto and York Region police over connections between law enforcement and criminal activity, an Ontario police watchdog is taking action. Inspector General Ryan Teschner, a former executive director of the Toronto Police Services Board, announced today (Monday) that he will appoint an independent individual to conduct an inspection. This appointee’s primary focus will be to perform an in-depth assessment of the province’s police services and boards and evaluate their ability to prevent, detect, and respond to corruption.
“Although this issue originated with the Toronto Police Service, we have since learned that other organizations may be affected,” Teschner stated.
“Incidents like these understandably shake public trust in policing as a whole. It’s crucial to acknowledge the legitimate questions the public is asking and the potential impact these questions may have on their confidence in Ontario’s policing system.”
The Back Story:
On February 5, news broke that seven Toronto police officers were implicated in a corruption investigation involving a conspiracy to murder a local corrections officer who had reportedly crossed paths with a gang of criminals engaged in various illegal activities, including murder and drug trafficking.
What began as an investigation into this murder plot quickly expanded into a comprehensive inquiry into corruption within the Toronto and York Region police departments.
York Regional Police disclosed the results of its extensive seven-month investigation, dubbed Project South, to the public.
According to reports, this was not a crime of passion carried out in a moment of rage, but rather a meticulously planned and premeditated murder scheme that unfolded at a York Region home in June 2025. The plot involved Toronto officers accessing sensitive police databases to gather information on the corrections officer targeted for murder and sharing this information with the criminals involved, all in exchange for a bribe.
The Plot:
Deputy Chief Ryan Hogan of the York Region Police addressed the media, revealing that on June 20, 2025, “several suspects went to the home of this corrections officer in York Region… allegedly with the intention of murdering him.” They were armed with a loaded handgun and rammed into a marked York Regional Police cruiser that was stationed outside the ‘target’s’ home to protect him. This incident was captured on video.
As a result of the subsequent investigation, seven police officers, including a retired officer, were arrested by York Regional Police on numerous charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and drug trafficking.
In addition to the serving officers, nineteen civilians were also arrested. On Friday, February 6, Peel Regional Police announced the suspension of three officers, with no charges filed at this time.
The individual described as the “mastermind” of this conspiracy, 56-year-old Constable Timothy Barnhardt, is a veteran officer whose criminal activities would shame even an experienced criminal. He appeared in court on Friday and was denied bail.
