Ben-Gvir enters occupied East Jerusalem’s Silwan
Israeli minister's visit to the Palestinian neighborhood comes amid heavy security deployment in an area at the center of settlement tensions
JERUSALEM, Palestine (MNTV) – Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir entered the Palestinian town of Silwan in occupied East Jerusalem on Tuesday under heavy security protection, according to Palestinian authorities.
The Jerusalem Governorate said Israeli occupation forces imposed extensive security measures and deployed heavily throughout the area while escorting Ben-Gvir into Silwan.
The governorate also released video footage showing the minister surrounded by a large security detail during the visit.
Silwan, located just south of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, has long been one of the most contested Palestinian neighborhoods in occupied East Jerusalem, with historic roots to Palestinians.
The area has witnessed years of illegal Israeli settlement expansion, repeated home demolitions, military raids and efforts to displace Palestinian residents, drawing widespread international criticism.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and unilaterally annexed the territory in 1980.
The annexation has not been recognized by the international community, which continues to regard East Jerusalem as occupied Palestinian territory under international law.
Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as the capital of a future independent state, in line with numerous international resolutions that reject Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied city.
