Algerian Civil Protection ranks among world’s top 10 services
Agency praised for readiness and disaster response capabilities
ALGIERS, Algeria (MNTV) — The Algerian Civil Protection has been recognized as one of the top 10 civil protection agencies worldwide, according to a global assessment of emergency response organizations based on their preparedness for major disasters.
The ranking is part of a study conducted by Harvard University, prepared by American researchers Alfred Maxim and Gianna Thompson.
Evaluation criteria included annual intervention numbers, the ratio of personnel to population, experience in large-scale operations, geographic coverage, and involvement in international relief efforts.
The United States Civil Protection service was ranked first, while the top ten also included agencies from Japan, Germany, Russia, South Korea, Turkey, Canada, and France. Algeria stands out as the only African nation featured among the top 30 global civil defense organizations.
Colonel Boualem Boughlef, who has led the Algerian Civil Protection since 2018, is credited with modernizing the agency’s operational approach. Under his guidance, the organization now conducts monthly simulation exercises for natural and industrial disasters.
Local units across Algeria’s wilayas have been instructed to organize mini-operational drills addressing forest fires, maritime accidents, building and factory fires, floods, flash floods, and earthquakes.
This strategy has significantly strengthened the agency’s operational readiness and field expertise.
