Algeria officially launches 5G network
Rollout begins with first base stations as government prioritizes phased expansion supporting smart services and next-generation innovation
ALGIERS, Algeria (MNTV) — Algeria has formally activated its 5G mobile network, ushering in a new phase of digital connectivity designed to accelerate the country’s technological development and long-term modernization goals.
The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications announced the launch, calling it a defining moment for national digital advancement.
The announcement was made during a ceremony at the International Conference Center in Algiers, presided over by Minister of Post and Telecommunications Ali Zerouki.
Senior officials and representatives from mobile operators Mobilis, Djezzy, and Ooredoo attended, each presenting live demonstrations of how 5G technology can enhance digital services and support Algeria’s transition toward a smart, innovation-driven economy.
Following the activation, the first 5G base stations have begun operating, with nationwide deployment to proceed under a six-year plan.
The strategy will begin in selected provinces and gradually extend coverage to all regions, ensuring an orderly and accessible transition for individuals, businesses, and public institutions.
Experts say 5G is set to deliver significant upgrades across the telecommunications landscape, including far higher data speeds, sharply reduced latency, and the ability to support massive device connectivity.
These improvements are expected to advance sectors such as healthcare, education, industrial automation, digital administration, and smart-city infrastructure.
Officials noted that the adoption of 5G positions Algeria as a rising digital competitor in North Africa and lays the groundwork for sustained innovation across the country’s key economic and social domains.
