Algeria advances efforts against violence targeting women
UN-backed project highlights legal, institutional progress and stronger coordination to protect women and girls nationwide
ALGIERS, Algeria (MNTV) — Algeria’s progress in addressing violence against women and girls was highlighted on Sunday during a meeting in Algiers reviewing national response efforts, in line with directives issued by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The meeting marked the presentation of a report on the second phase of the project titled “Supporting Algerian Response Efforts in Combating Violence Against Women and Girls,” prepared jointly by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Algeria and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Foreign Ministry representative Fathi Metref said the project’s outcomes reflect tangible progress achieved by Algeria.
He added that the initiative focuses on strengthening institutional capacity through training, targeted workshops and improved coordination among relevant stakeholders to better support victims.
Metref said the project demonstrates high-level political commitment to addressing violence against women and girls as a serious human rights violation, and reaffirmed the state’s determination to combat all forms of violence through coordinated national and international partnerships.
He also highlighted Algeria’s legal and institutional advancements in protecting women and children at both national and international levels.
Faiza Ben Driss, head of UNFPA Algeria, praised the project’s results, describing them as highly positive and reflective of meaningful progress in safeguarding women and girls against violence.
She also commended President Tebboune’s active role in prioritizing the initiative and mobilizing multiple sectors to ensure its success.
UNODC Algeria representative Yacine Beldjebel said the report underscores Algeria’s substantial efforts to strengthen protection mechanisms for women and girls affected by violence.
He added that the agency remains committed to providing technical expertise and training to support national stakeholders.
