Air defense systems activated over Tehran amid drone threat
Air defenses engage suspected reconnaissance drones as tensions persist despite fragile ceasefire following US and Israeli strikes
TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — Iran activated air defense systems over its capital on Thursday evening in response to what officials described as incoming small drones and reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles, according to state-linked media reports.
Iran’s official news agency IRNA and the semi-official Tasnim agency said defensive operations were underway across multiple areas of Tehran, including western, central and southeastern districts, indicating a broad and sustained response to the aerial threat.
The latest incident comes amid ongoing instability following a wave of US and Israeli military strikes launched on Feb. 28, which triggered a wider regional escalation.
Tehran subsequently retaliated against US-aligned targets in the Gulf and moved to close the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global shipping routes.
Although a ceasefire was announced on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, efforts to secure a lasting agreement have faltered. Talks held in Islamabad on April 11 failed to produce a breakthrough, leaving the situation unresolved.
In a move widely viewed as unilateral, US President Donald Trump later extended the truce without defining a clear timeline, raising concerns about the durability of the arrangement and the absence of a negotiated settlement framework.
Observers say the renewed activation of air defenses reflects the fragility of the ceasefire and underscores the continued risk of escalation driven by external military pressure on Iran.
