After Trump Claims “Total Control of Hormuz,” Canada Sanctions Iran for Blockading the Strait. Confused? So Are We.
August 14, 2026, Toronto – Some of us may feel lost and confused after reading this headline. Especially those who have been following this totally unjustified and unnecessary war on Iran by America at the behest of Israel. We would remember Trump’s statement to Fox and CNN on Wednesday, August 12, where he stridently claimed: “They (Iran) don’t have control. We (America) have total control. We own it, and at some point, maybe they’ll do something, and then they’ll get (sic) blown away,” he bragged to reporters. He insisted, “Right now, we’re in a very good position,” and promised that “the US Navy has swept the strait for mines” to make the waterway safe for incoming and outgoing traffic.
So, is there no blockade? Or is there?
Even if we ignore Trump’s exaggerated claims as wishful thinking or outright fabrications (both would be accurate), we must still consider the facts on the ground. Iran is responding to an unprovoked attack on its sovereign territory. Like any nation under assault, it has the right to defend itself using all available means, including action in the Strait of Hormuz, which is in Iranian territorial waters, unless America and Canada wish to change the map to deny this geographical reality.
What’s more telling is how the US has moved from “stopping Iran from getting a nuclear bomb” to disrupting its missile program to bringing ‘democracy to Iran‘ by attempting to overthrow Iran’s government, to something that one had never heard of before the war – opening a waterway that was never closed in the first place, and which Israel convinced Trump could never be closed, a notion that Trump eagerly bought into, urged on by significant monetary contributions from a certain Mirian Adelson.
The result: In the face of superior firepower and America’s infinite resources, Iran did what little it could to defend itself; it shut down the Strait.
A fully justified action by a besieged country that some find hard to accept. Case in point: Canada. Instead of facilitating peace or maintaining neutrality, roles Canada has historically embraced, the country has surprised many by choosing to take sides, as recent government actions suggest.
Breaking: Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Anita Anand, announced new sanctions today against five Iranian officials for undermining “international peace, security, and stability” with the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.
Those sanctioned include a senior official from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the head of Iran’s foreign policy and national security committee, a naval commander, and the chair of the Iranian energy exporters union.
These sanctions prohibit Canadians from engaging with the listed individuals and freeze any Canadian assets they may hold. To date, Canada has sanctioned 232 individuals and 260 entities connected to Iran’s intelligence, security, and economic networks.
