Iraq takes over US forces headquarters at Baghdad airport

BAGHDAD (MNTV) — Iraq has taken control of the main headquarters previously used by United States forces at Baghdad International Airport as the country prepares to conclude the current phase of its cooperation with the international coalition against ISIS.

Iraqi authorities confirmed the takeover, with Security Media Cell chief Gen. Saad Maan saying the government now has the authority to determine the nature of military and security forces’ presence in the country, Iraqi media reported.

Maan said strengthening Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, along with independently managing national security affairs, were central to maintaining stability. He said these principles could also support wider and more effective Iraqi cooperation with regional and international partners.

The transfer comes as Iraq prepares to conclude its current cooperation with the international coalition supporting its campaign against ISIS. The present phase is expected to formally end on Sept. 30, marking the conclusion of the mission of foreign military forces participating in the coalition framework.

Following the end of the current mission, Iraq is expected to move toward bilateral security arrangements with some former coalition members, including the United States.

The next phase is expected to include assistance with arms programs, training for Iraqi security personnel and measures aimed at improving their preparedness to respond to emerging security threats.

The transition reflects Baghdad’s broader effort to assume greater responsibility for its national security arrangements while maintaining defense cooperation with international partners.
