UAE grants Starlink 10-year license for satellite internet
License will allow Starlink to provide broadband connectivity to homes, businesses, government agencies, maritime users and airlines
ABU DHABI, UAE (MNTV) — The United Arab Emirates has granted Starlink a 10-year license to provide satellite broadband internet services across the country, expanding the range of connectivity options available to consumers and businesses.
According to TechAfrica News, the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) issued Starlink Satellite Communications Services a 10-year Public Space Services Licence, allowing the company to operate satellite internet services for customers across multiple sectors.
The license covers residential and commercial users as well as government institutions. It also permits Starlink to serve customers in the maritime and aviation industries, potentially providing another connectivity option in locations where conventional terrestrial networks are less practical.
TDRA Director General Eng. Majed Sultan Al Mesmar said the approval demonstrates the UAE’s efforts to adopt advanced technologies and maintain a regulatory environment that encourages innovation and investment.
Al Mesmar said the agreement would increase the choices available to internet users while supporting the UAE’s ambitions to remain a major regional and international center for telecommunications and the digital economy.
The regulator said satellite broadband would add diversity to the country’s communications infrastructure and improve the resilience of its digital networks. The technology can provide connectivity in areas where traditional infrastructure may face geographic or practical limitations.
The licensing decision is also part of the UAE’s broader efforts to accommodate emerging technologies within its telecommunications framework and facilitate the expansion of advanced digital services.
Under the 10-year license, Starlink can build its satellite broadband operations in the UAE while providing services to residential, commercial, government, maritime and aviation customers.
The agreement further expands the role of satellite-based connectivity in the UAE’s digital infrastructure as the country continues to promote investment in telecommunications, technology and the wider digital economy.
