Morocco demands investigation after citizen killed during arrest in Italy
Rabat calls for transparent inquiry as police custody death in Bologna sparks protests, political backlash and criminal investigation into officers' actions
RABAT, Morocco (MNTV) — Morocco has urged Italian authorities to conduct a full and transparent investigation into the death of Moroccan national Abderrahim Fakir during his arrest in the northern Italian city of Bologna, as demonstrations and political tensions continue to grow over the incident.
Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Italy to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death of the 42-year-old and identify those responsible. The ministry also urged Italian authorities to take any necessary legal action following the incident.
The Moroccan Embassy in Italy echoed the demand, saying a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation was essential to establish exactly what happened.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described Fakir’s death as unacceptable and said authorities must investigate any possible wrongdoing without bias or leniency.
At the same time, she condemned violent unrest that followed the incident, saying attacks on police officers and public disorder could not be justified.
Opposition lawmaker Ilaria Cucchi sharply criticized Meloni’s government, accusing it of fostering a political climate marked by hostility and discrimination. She also condemned public expressions of support for the officers involved while the investigation remains ongoing.
Public anger erupted in Bologna after Fakir died during his arrest on Sunday. Demonstrations later escalated into clashes between protesters and police, leaving dozens of officers and several demonstrators injured, according to Italian authorities and local media.
Prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the case. Video recorded by a witness appears to show Fakir calling for help while officers restrained him on the ground for several minutes before he lost consciousness.
Italian media reported police had responded to reports of erratic behavior and were informed that Fakir was experiencing a psychiatric emergency.
Speaking at a public rally, Fakir’s niece said the family was seeking truth and justice rather than revenge.
Authorities have placed six people under preliminary investigation, including two police officers and four ambulance personnel. Prosecutors are examining possible manslaughter charges while awaiting autopsy findings and the results of further forensic investigations.
