Iran says it shot down a US drone near the Strait of Hormuz as strikes escalate
Tehran reported intercepting the aircraft at Bandar Abbas hours after US Central Command announced a fresh wave of strikes across Iran. Washington had no immediate response
TEHRAN (MNTV) — Iran said on Tuesday that it had shot down a US drone over Bandar Abbas, in the country’s south near the Strait of Hormuz, as the confrontation between Tehran and Washington sharpened.
In a statement carried by state broadcaster IRIB, the Iranian army said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed the drone in the early hours of the day. There was no immediate comment from the United States on the claim, which could not be independently verified. Iranian media had earlier reported explosions to the west of Bandar Abbas.
US Central Command, meanwhile, said it had completed a new round of strikes on military targets across Iran, naming Bushehr, Chah Bahar, Jask, Konarak, Abu Musa, and Bandar Abbas.
The exchange marks a further escalation over the Strait of Hormuz, where the two sides have traded attacks in recent days despite a Pakistani-mediated memorandum of understanding meant to wind down the conflict and open the way to a lasting peace deal.
The strait itself is now at the center of the dispute.
Trump said on Monday that Washington would likely take over operations in the waterway and that he expected other countries to pay the United States for protecting it. Iran’s military rejected any such role, vowing it would not permit US interference in how the strait is managed.
