ISTANBUL, Türkiye (MNTV) — Türkiye on Tuesday held nationwide events to mark the 107th anniversary of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s arrival in Samsun, a historic moment widely regarded as the beginning of the country’s War of Independence and the foundation of the modern republic.
The May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day was observed across the country with ceremonies, cultural programs, sports activities and public gatherings highlighting national unity and the role of young people in shaping Türkiye’s future.
In Samsun, where Atatürk first landed in 1919, commemorations drew large participation throughout the day. Ceremonies at Ilkadım Archery Facilities began with a moment of silence followed by the national anthem, reflecting the historical significance of the date.
In Istanbul, central celebrations were held at the Atatürk Cultural Center, where officials, students and residents observed a moment of silence for Atatürk and fallen soldiers before singing the national anthem. A message from Youth and Sports Minister Osman Aşkın Bak was also read during the event.
Officials used the occasion to emphasize the importance of youth development, education, sports and cultural engagement. Istanbul’s provincial youth director said the legacy of the independence struggle should inspire efforts to strengthen future generations through science, arts and athletics.
The program in Istanbul included performances, folk dances, theatrical presentations on the National Struggle, and awards for students who placed in national competitions in art, essay writing and poetry.
A symbolic bicycle tour was also held in Istanbul, with participants cycling through historic landmarks including Sultanahmet Square and Dolmabahçe Palace as part of nationwide celebrations promoting unity and active lifestyles.
Across eastern and western provinces, including Erzurum, Kars, Bursa and Çanakkale, residents joined similar events featuring flag marches, concerts, sports demonstrations and cultural performances.
Despite rainy weather in some regions, celebrations continued across the country, reflecting broad public participation in one of Türkiye’s key national commemorative days.
