Bangladesh marks Eid-ul-Fitr with major prayers despite rain forecasts
Nationwide atmosphere of celebration unfolds as millions gather for Eid prayers, from Dhaka’s National Eidgah to Sholakia and Dinajpur.
DHAKA, Bangladesh (MNTV) — Bangladeshis celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr on Saturday with nationwide prayers and a renewed sense of communal festivity, as large crowds gathered at major Eidgahs despite security restrictions and warnings of rain across the country.
The main congregation took place at the National Eidgah in Dhaka, where thousands assembled for the central prayer led by Mufti Mohammad Abdul Malek, the khatib of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the prayers alongside cabinet members, lawmakers, senior officials, and worshippers from across the capital. A special supplication followed, seeking national peace, prosperity, and the well-being of the global Muslim community.
In a message delivered on the eve of Eid, Prime Minister Rahman urged the nation to carry forward the spirit of unity and compassion cultivated during Ramadan, hoping the festival’s joy would “reach every home.”
Outside the capital, one of the country’s largest Eid gatherings convened at the historic Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj, where tight security ensured a smooth congregation.
Tens of thousands also attended prayers at Dinajpur’s vast Gor-e-Shahid Maidan — a 22-acre Eidgah considered one of the largest in South Asia by area — although local officials reported attendance was slightly reduced following overnight rainfall.
In Dhaka’s Mirpur, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman joined worshippers for Eid prayers before greeting community members. Similar scenes of festivity were reported across cities and towns as families exchanged greetings, visited relatives, and prepared traditional foods to mark the end of Ramadan.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department warned of rain, thundershowers, and gusty winds over the next five days — including on Eid day — with the possibility of hail in some regions.
Despite the unsettled weather outlook, worshippers across the nation proceeded with Eid rituals, reflecting an enduring cultural emphasis on communal prayer and celebration.
