Syrian authorities repair Deir Ezzor airport runway for flight operations
Decade-long closure ends as government restores infrastructure and safety standards
DEIR EZZOR, Syria (MNTV) — Syrian authorities have begun repairing Deir Ezzor Civil Airport, preparing the facility for the resumption of commercial flights after more than a decade of closure due to the civil war.
Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport said technical teams are rehabilitating the runway, restoring key airport facilities, and rebuilding the perimeter fence to comply with international safety and security standards.
The airport’s long-term closure followed extensive damage to regional infrastructure, including bridges along the Euphrates River.
Government forces regained control of northeastern Syria in January through an agreement with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which included a ceasefire and the phased integration of military and administrative structures.
As part of the same accord, Syrian authorities recently assumed security responsibilities at Qamishli airport in Hasaka Province, marking further steps toward restoring civil aviation operations across the region.
