Baku’s “White City” wins global sustainability award at London summit
The award was given in the category of “Climate-Resilient Urban Planning – Integrating Sustainability into Urban Development and Economic Growth Strategies”
BAKU, Azerbaijan (MNTV) — Azerbaijan’s landmark Baku White City project has received the “Excellence in Sustainable City Development” award in the category of “Climate-Resilient Urban Planning – Integrating Sustainability into Urban Development and Economic Growth Strategies” at the 4th Global Sustainability Summit (GSSA) held at the Palace of Westminster (House of Lords) in London, AZTV reported.
The prestigious summit brought together global leaders, policymakers, industry experts, and sustainability advocates committed to building a greener, climate-resilient future.
Stephen Cook, Director of ARUP (UK) — the sustainable development partner of Baku White City — presented the project at the event. He highlighted Azerbaijan’s growing portfolio of green initiatives and shared the results of a “Happy City” assessment conducted for Baku White City.
Cook noted that the project was among the first in the region to incorporate green building principles, undergo a CRREM (Carbon Risk Real Estate Monitor) assessment, and collaborate with BREEAM and LEED consultants to integrate energy sustainability into urban design.
Launched on December 24, 2011, by President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, Baku White City has become an international model for sustainable urban planning and ecological restoration within its first decade.
The project was also showcased during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) held in Baku in November 2024, where it was recognized as a successful case of transforming environmentally degraded areas through sustainable construction technologies and smart city principles.
Baku White City is being developed under the “Comprehensive Action Plan for Improving the Ecological Situation in the Republic of Azerbaijan (2006–2010)” endorsed by a presidential decree.
