Kazakhstan pushes inclusive AI with guide for blind and sign language assistant
From guiding visually impaired users to detecting harmful emissions, Kazakh scientists showcase AI-driven solutions at national expo
ASTANA, Kazakhstan (MNTV) — Kazakh researchers have introduced a range of artificial intelligence projects designed to make technology more inclusive and environmentally conscious, including a navigation guide for the visually impaired and a sensor-based “electronic nose” for pollution monitoring.
According to Silk Way TV, the innovations were presented at the ENU AI Expo in Astana, where scientists and developers highlighted the growing role of homegrown AI in fields from education to public health.
Among the projects showcased, the AI-based inclusive guide drew particular attention. Using a laser, camera, and QR-coded maps, the device can plot indoor routes and relay directions to users via a wireless earpiece. It operates for up to five hours on a single charge and does not require internet access, offering autonomy for people with visual impairments in unfamiliar spaces.
Another highlight was the “electronic nose”, a nanotechnology-driven system that integrates AI and IoT sensors to detect gases, monitor environmental emissions, and assess product quality. “The system processes data in real time, identifies harmful substances, and displays results instantly,” said research team member Aliya Issainova.
The exhibition also featured an AI avatar lecturer to support online education and SignBridge, a project that translates text into Kazakh Sign Language through a virtual assistant. Developers said the initiatives reflect Kazakhstan’s focus on localized innovation, with nearly 90 percent of AI agents created in the Kazakh language.
Organizers emphasized that the expo served not only as a platform for showcasing prototypes but also for encouraging collaboration. “The emphasis is on learning from one another. While some applications are already moving toward commercialization, our main priority is strengthening Kazakh society through technology,” said Leila Sabitova, Director of the ENU Online Learning Department.
