Türkiye’s historic Manisa hospital to host international toxicology summit
Global experts to convene at centuries-old healing center to address rising drug challenges
ANKARA, Türkiye (MNTV) — The historic Manisa Mental Health Hospital (RSHH), founded in the 16th century by Hafsa Sultan, the mother of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, will host the 1st International Forensic and Clinical Toxicology Days on Oct. 10–11, 2025.
The event comes amid growing global concerns over synthetic drugs and evolving trafficking routes, according to Daily Sabah.
Originally established in 1539 as a healing center, or “bimarhane,” the institution combined medical, educational, and spiritual care.
Today, it stands as a modern toxicology hub equipped with advanced laboratories, bridging centuries of medical evolution from herbal remedies to cutting-edge science.
“This hospital has witnessed five centuries of healing, and now it is leading efforts in toxicology,” medical historians noted.
Chief Physician Cengiz Cengisiz said the two-day summit will bring together international toxicologists, forensic scientists, and legal experts.
Notable speakers include Austrian toxicologist Prof. Thomas Keller, Turkish Supreme Court Justice Haluk Beşer, and Chief Prosecutor Ali Yeldan.
Sessions will address topics such as workplace drug testing, accreditation standards, and detection of emerging psychoactive substances.
Organizers emphasized Türkiye’s geographic and strategic importance as a bridge between Europe and Asia, highlighting the need for enhanced cooperation and technology in combating drug trafficking. With RSHH serving 12 provinces, the findings are expected to have direct impact across the region.
“The humanitarian vision that inspired this healing house continues to guide our scientific approach to addiction,” the organizing committee said, stressing the importance of treating drug abuse as both a health and social issue.
Supported by universities and technology firms, the summit is positioned to strengthen Türkiye’s role as a regional hub for toxicology research and international collaboration.
