Torontonians Can ‘Play’ Their Part In The FIFA World Cup ’26
That’s true! Soccer enthusiasts in Toronto can ‘play’ a part in the upcoming FIFA World Cup ’26 by signing up as a volunteer for the matches to be played in the City.
As a lead-up to that, the City of Toronto has launched a recruitment drive to enroll over 3,000 volunteers to oversee accessibility services, media operations, and fan experiences during the matches. The World Cup is scheduled to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the USA from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
Volunteers will also have the chance to help coordinate event logistics for six matches in Toronto, including the Canadian Men’s National Team’s home opener on June 12, according to a City spokesperson.
This is being described as a once-in-a-generation experience and opportunity for Torontonians who are passionate about soccer.
To participate, volunteers must be at least 18 years old and fill out an online application form. There is no deadline to apply; however, positions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Toronto is proud to be a Host City for the FIFA World Cup 2026, and we’re even prouder of the people who will help make it happen,” said Mayor Olivia Chow. “Volunteers are the heart of every major event in our City. This is your chance to be part of history, meet new people, and showcase the warmth and diversity of Toronto.”
According to FIFA, approximately 65,000 volunteers are expected to participate across the three host nations: Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Volunteers will gain practical experience, develop new skills, and create lasting memories in a program focused on the values of inclusion, community pride, and legacy, as mentioned by the City.
Neil Lumsden, Ontario’s Minister of Sport, emphasized that it requires a dedicated team of enthusiastic volunteers to make sporting events unforgettable.
“As we prepare to welcome the world for the FIFA World Cup next summer, I encourage fans across Ontario to get involved and be part of this once-in-a-generation event,” Lumsden stated.
Virtual volunteer information sessions will be held on August 11, 14, 18, and 21, 2025.
Recognized as the “world’s biggest sports tournament,” this World Cup will be played across 16 host cities and will feature 48 national teams. The kick-off is scheduled to take place in Mexico City on June 11, 2026.
