1st UN aid convoy enters Afghanistan in 9 months
Pakistan allows 29 World Food Program containers to enter Afghanistan via Pakistan's Torkham crossing
Pakistan has allowed 29 aid containers to cross into Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The Torkham border, one of two key trade routes between Pakistan and Afghanistan, has been closed since last October amid escalating tensions between the two neighbours.
“All other activities except for return of (Afghan) refugees and the movement of containers carrying humanitarian assistance, still remain suspended,” said the official, who was not allowed to speak on record.
Islamabad launched a new round of deportations of undocumented Afghan refugees last week amid recent militant attacks across Pakistan.
More than 2.4 million Afghan nationals have returned to Afghanistan since Islamabad began implementing a phased repatriation program in September 2023, according to statistics.
Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of allowing militant groups to use its soil to carry out terror attacks, a charge Kabul denies.
A WFP convoy of about 20 containers was returned from Torkham earlier this year after Afghanistan refused to accept assistance from the UN agency, according to the English Dawn newspaper.
