US midterm elections get underway as voters decide control of Congress, governorships
All 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats and 36 governorships among key contests
WASHINGTON (MNTV) – Americans began voting Tuesday in midterm elections to determine the composition of Congress, elect state governors and choose thousands of other state and local representatives.
Polling stations opened at 6 am local time (1000GMT) in several eastern states, including New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Virginia, as well as parts of Indiana and Kentucky.
Voting was scheduled to commence at varying times across the rest of the country.
The elections will determine all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats.
Voters will also elect governors in 36 states, alongside state legislators and local government officials. Several states are additionally holding ballot initiatives and referendums on various policy matters.
Republicans currently hold majorities in both chambers of Congress, while Democrats are seeking to flip at least one chamber, potentially constraining President Donald Trump’s ability to advance his legislative agenda during the remainder of his term.
Voting is set to continue throughout Tuesday across the country’s different time zones, with the earliest scheduled poll closures beginning at 6 pm Eastern Time.
