US–Canada trade talks halted over Reagan ad controversy
The move marks a sharp escalation in U.S.–Canada trade tensions, which have seen repeated disputes throughout Trump’s presidency
WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) – U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly ended all trade negotiations with Canada after alleging that Ontario authorities produced an advertisement using manipulated audio of former President Ronald Reagan.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation confirmed it had not authorized the ad, which distorted Reagan’s 1987 remarks on free trade. It said it is exploring legal action for unauthorized use of his likeness and voice.
Trump accused Canada of “egregious behavior,” saying the $75,000 campaign was intended to influence U.S. judicial decisions.
He defended tariffs as essential to U.S. national security.
The move marks a sharp escalation in U.S.–Canada trade tensions, which have seen repeated disputes throughout Trump’s presidency.
