UN: Women and girls with disabilities still face discrimination
UN Women says women and girls with disabilities continue to face compounded discrimination that restricts their access to essential services
NEW YORK, United States (MNTV) – UN Women says women and girls with disabilities continue to face compounded discrimination that restricts their access to essential services, economic opportunities, leadership roles and public participation.
Marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the UN agency urged societies to respect the rights, dignity and leadership of women and girls with disabilities, noting they play vital roles in care systems, economic life, community resilience and peacebuilding.
In its statement, UN Women emphasized that advancing social progress requires inclusive environments grounded in human rights.
The organization said women and girls with disabilities strengthen the societies they belong to, yet remain disproportionately excluded.
According to UN figures, one in five women globally lives with a disability—representing nearly 20% of all women—compared to 12% of men.
