Syria to reopen al-Arida border crossing with Lebanon ahead of Eid al-Adha
Move aims to facilitate civilian travel despite ongoing restoration work; Lebanon yet to comment on reopening
TARTUS, Syria (MNTV) — Syrian authorities announced on Sunday that the Al-Arida border crossing with Lebanon will reopen to passenger traffic on Tuesday, in advance of the Eid al-Adha holiday set to begin on Friday.
In a statement, Syria’s General Authority for Land and Sea Ports confirmed the decision, noting that the crossing would open “despite ongoing restoration and maintenance work, in order to facilitate the movement of residents during the Eid al-Adha holiday.”
The Al-Arida crossing, which links Syria’s western Tartus Governorate with Lebanon’s northern Akkar Governorate, has been undergoing rehabilitation on the Syrian side.
Meanwhile, Lebanese authorities have conducted repairs on their side of the crossing, which was damaged in Israeli airstrikes during last September’s escalation between Israel and Lebanon.
No official confirmation or statement has yet been issued by Lebanese officials regarding the reopening.
The border point is one of six official crossings between Lebanon and Syria, alongside Jdeidet Yabous, Dabousiyah, Jusiyah, Talkalakh, and Matribah.
The reopening is expected to ease family visits and cross-border trade during the holiday period.
The move comes amid Syria opening its avenues for foreign and regional investment and joining international forums for social, political and diplomatic inclusion.
