Republican Oklahoma City mayoral candidate Carol Hefner said during a debate she thinks Islam should be “eradicated” from the globe.
Hefner defended her past Islamophobic social media posts during the debate.
Debate moderator Storme Jones pointed out Hefner has previously called Islam “an evil culture and not a religion.”
Hefner’s response was that the “insipid” religion must come to an end.
She equated Islam to slavery.
Oklahoma is home to more than 30,000 Muslims, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations Oklahoma chapter.
Hefner was the co-chair of former President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign in Oklahoma.
She is also a former fundraiser for the Republican Party.
