Qatar evaluates Turkish Steel Dome air defense system
Doha reviews multilayer missile shield to strengthen low-altitude protection after gaps exposed in recent conflict
DOHA, Qatar (MNTV) — Qatar is considering acquiring Türkiye’s Steel Dome multilayer air and missile defense system following an Israeli attack that exposed vulnerabilities in existing Patriot and NASAMS batteries.
Officials are assessing the system, developed by Aselsan, Roketsan, MKE, and TÜBİTAK SAGE, to determine if it can fill gaps in low-altitude protection around critical sites.
The first layer covers threats within 10 km and up to 5 km altitude, using systems such as Korkut, Gökberk, Şahin, Göker, İhtar, and Sungur.
For targets between 5 and 10 km, the package includes Herikks, C-Ram, Hisar A+, Gökdemir, and Gürz systems.
The medium-range Hisar O system extends coverage up to 25 km with radar-guided interceptors, while the long-range Trench system reaches 100 km, with further expansion under development.
Authorities say adopting Steel Dome could enhance Qatar’s layered defense capabilities, providing a more resilient shield against low- and medium-altitude aerial threats.
