Philippines set to launch ‘Halal Town’
The Philippine government has announced plans to develop a dedicated “Halal Town” designed to preserve rich Islamic heritage of the country
MANILA, the Philippines (MNTV) – The Philippine government has announced plans to develop a dedicated “Halal Town” designed to celebrate and preserve the rich Islamic heritage of the country, reports the Halal Times.
This ambitious project, currently in the advanced planning stages with feasibility studies underway, aims to create a world-class destination that seamlessly blends authentic Islamic culture, heritage preservation, halal-certified services, and economic opportunities, particularly within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) or other historically significant Muslim areas.
“This is not merely about building hotels and restaurants,” stated the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Fred Pascual during a recent press briefing. “This is about creating a vibrant ecosystem where Islamic heritage – our shared heritage as Filipinos – is not just displayed, but lived, practiced, and passed on. It’s about economic empowerment for host communities, cultural pride, and offering the world an authentic window into the beauty and depth of Filipino Islamic traditions.”
While specific locations are still being finalized (with strong contenders in Cotabato City, Marawi City during its rebuilding, or key areas in the ARMM), the conceptual framework for the Halal Town is taking shape.
The town is going to have interactive exhibits showcasing the history of Islam in the Philippines, including artifacts from pre-colonial Sultanates, traditional textiles (like the intricate Inaul weave of Maguindanao and the vibrant Yakan patterns), ancient manuscripts, and replicas of historical mosques.
The town will also have a centerpiece mosque featuring traditional Filipino Islamic architecture, serving as a place of worship, community gathering, and educational resource about Islamic practices and local traditions.
The town will adhere to strict halal standards certified by recognized national and international bodies (like the Philippine Halal Accreditation and Board – PHAB). This covers food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, logistics, and services.
Moreover, the town will have prayer facilities in all public areas, hotels with Qibla direction indicators and prayer mats, segregated swimming pools and spa facilities where requested, and readily available access to halal personal care products.
The Islamic Cultural Center in the town will offer educational programs, seminars, and lectures on Islamic history, theology, art, and the specific contributions of Filipino Muslims to the nation.
Furthermore, there will be designated areas and programs aimed at fostering understanding and respect between Muslim and non-Muslim Filipinos, as well as international visitors, promoting peace and unity.
