Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar inaugurated Pakistan’s first Google Chromebook assembly line, calling it a “historic milestone” in the country’s digital transformation
ISLAMABAD (MNTV) — Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar inaugurated Pakistan’s first Google Chromebook assembly line, calling it a “historic milestone” in the country’s digital transformation and economic growth.
“Today marks a historic milestone as we celebrate the invaluable partnership between Google and Pakistan,” Dar said at the launch ceremony in Islamabad, Dawn reported.
He said localizing Chromebook assembly would make access to digital tools “more affordable and inclusive,” especially for the education sector.
Dar, who also serves as foreign minister, said the assembly line will generate employment, strengthen local supply chains, and pave the way for future technology exports.
Under a new memorandum of understanding, Pakistan and Google will train 100,000 developers nationwide, with additional initiatives for the gaming and startup industries.
“Together, we will also advance localized AI-powered solutions, such as Android services for public safety, and offer 100,000 Google Career Certificates to equip Pakistanis with world-class digital training,” Dar said.
He added that Google’s decision to establish a local office in Pakistan was “a moment of national pride and a powerful endorsement of our digital potential,” describing it as a move with “far-reaching implications for the economy, innovation ecosystem and investor confidence.”
Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja called the project a “transformative step” linking technology, manufacturing, and education. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing Pakistan’s digital journey.
In June 2024, Google for Education’s local partner Tech Valley, the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation, and Australian firm Allied announced plans to set up the Chromebook line in Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
A day before the launch, a delegation from Tech Valley met Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and pledged support to establish a similar factory in Punjab to boost tech-driven education and IT infrastructure.
