Oman launches tree-planting drive in Al Sireen Reserve
Campaign part of national initiative to plant 10 million trees, expand green cover, and restore natural habitats nationwide
MUSCAT, Oman (MNTV) — Oman’s Environment Authority (EA) has launched a large-scale tree-planting campaign in the Al Sireen Nature Reserve in Amerat, Muscat, as part of the country’s ongoing effort to expand vegetation cover and promote environmental sustainability.
The initiative, which forms part of the national program to plant 10 million trees, aims to cultivate 4 million wild seeds and plant 10,000 native trees within the reserve.
The project is designed to enhance the ecosystem, improve environmental efficiency, and combat desertification while supporting biodiversity across the region, according to Zawya News.
Launched in 2020, the national tree-planting initiative is aligned with Oman Vision 2040 and focuses on expanding green spaces and restoring degraded habitats across all governorates.
The program prioritizes the cultivation of native, drought-tolerant species such as ghaf, samar, and sidr to ensure sustainable environmental development.
According to the Environment Authority, millions of wild tree seeds have already been planted nationwide — including 4 million in Dhofar and thousands more across Muscat and Dakhliyah — marking significant progress in the long-term reforestation effort.
The Al Sireen Nature Reserve, covering over 220 square kilometers, is one of Oman’s most important protected areas. It shelters endangered species such as the Arabian oryx, gazelles, and Arabian red foxes, and serves as a critical sanctuary for native flora and fauna.
Expanding green cover in the reserve will further strengthen its ecological balance and resilience against climate change impacts.
An EA official said the campaign reflects Oman’s growing commitment to sustainability and natural preservation. “Planting native trees is essential for maintaining biodiversity, restoring ecosystems, and achieving a greener, more sustainable Oman,” the official stated.
In a related effort, the Environment Authority also distributed 1,575 seedlings of wild and ornamental trees in Khabourah, as part of a separate greening campaign conducted in Suwaiq earlier this week.
