Oman broadens international air links across three continents
New routes support national aviation strategy targeting major growth in passengers, GDP contribution, and airport modernization
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (MNTV) — Oman is expanding its global air connectivity with a series of new routes to Asia, Europe, and Africa as the country accelerates its broader transport, tourism, and logistics agenda.
The Civil Aviation Authority, working alongside airport operators and domestic and foreign carriers, is leading the effort to strengthen both passenger and cargo movement across the sultanate, according to the Oman News Agency.
The expansion aligns with Oman’s long-term aviation strategy, which aims to increase the sector’s GDP contribution from 159 million Omani rials in 2018 to 890 million rials by 2030.
The plan also targets handling 40 million passengers annually by the end of the decade, nearly double pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2019.
Officials say Oman is leveraging its strategic location along global air corridors to position the country as a key logistics and travel hub.
Strengthening airport infrastructure and enhancing domestic connectivity are central to boosting inter-governorate tourism and facilitating smoother passenger flows.
Operational indicators have continued to improve, with aircraft movements through Omani airspace rising 14 percent year-on-year to 530,300 by the end of 2024.
Revenues for the Civil Aviation Authority reached roughly 105 million rials in the same year, marking a 43 percent increase and reflecting improved efficiency and higher activity across the sector.
Authorities are also expanding partnerships with private-sector operators in areas such as ground handling, maintenance, catering, and air cargo management.
These initiatives support national plans to elevate service quality and adopt advanced operational technologies through greater private-sector participation.
A series of technical upgrades is underway across Omani airports, including modernized air navigation systems, enhanced radar coverage, and new digital platforms to strengthen resilience and operational continuity.
Sustainability measures—such as solar-powered facilities and the introduction of electric ground vehicles—are being expanded to align Oman’s aviation sector with global environmental standards.
