Netanyahu apologizes to Qatar for deadly Israeli strike in Doha
Israeli premier expresses regret over violation of Qatari sovereignty in unprecedented attack, pledges such actions will not be repeated after missile strike killed serviceman and Hamas members in the capital
WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a formal apology to Qatar for a missile strike earlier this month in Doha that killed a Qatari serviceman and several Hamas members, marking the first Israeli attack on the Gulf state.
The apology was conveyed to Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani in a joint phone call during Netanyahu’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, according to a statement released by Washington.
“Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed deep regret that Israel’s strike against Hamas leadership in Qatar unintentionally killed a Qatari security official,” the White House said, adding that the Israeli leader also acknowledged the violation of Qatari sovereignty and pledged not to repeat such an operation.
The September 9 strike targeted senior Hamas figures involved in ceasefire negotiations but ultimately killed five lower-ranking members along with the Qatari officer, while the group’s top leadership survived the assassination attempt.
The attack drew widespread condemnation, with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denouncing it as a “flagrant violation” of Qatar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Qatar, a central mediator in ongoing ceasefire talks, also hosts Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East, underscoring the regional and diplomatic sensitivity of the incident.
