Muslim man lynched after mob takes him from home in India
Family says attackers tied victim to a tree and beat him to death after dragging him from his home, while relatives accuse authorities of failing to act
NEW DELHI, India (MNTV) — A 25-year-old Muslim man was beaten to death after being taken from his home by a group of villagers in eastern India, according to allegations made by his family, in an incident that has triggered fresh concerns over mob violence targeting Muslims.
The victim, identified as Shahzad Ali, was killed in India’s Bihar state, where relatives say he was forcibly taken away by a group of men before being assaulted to death. According to independent Indian news outlet The Observer Post, family members allege the attack was carried out by several villagers who later abandoned him after the assault.
Ali’s wife, Mobina Khatoon, alleged in a police complaint that several men arrived at their home, called her husband outside and took him away. Hours later, relatives were informed that he had died.
According to the complaint, Ali was tied to a tree and assaulted with sticks, punches and kicks. Family members also alleged that cash he was carrying was taken during the attack.
Police have registered a case naming eight accused individuals, although authorities had not publicly announced arrests at the time of reporting.
Relatives claim the family has suffered repeated tragedies. Shahzad’s elder brother, Naushad Ali, died under what family members describe as suspicious circumstances around two months earlier after reportedly being found hanging from a tree.
The deaths have left behind two widows and multiple children without financial support, according to relatives.
Family members allege the attack may have originated from an earlier dispute connected to catering work, saying Shahzad worked as a cook and may have angered local residents after declining a work request months earlier.
Relatives also alleged that authorities initially promised swift arrests after the burial but later failed to act. Family members warned they could organize protests if those accused are not detained.
The family has further alleged that earlier communal tensions in the area may have contributed to the killing, although police have not officially confirmed any communal motive.
Mob violence involving Muslims has repeatedly drawn concern from civil rights advocates in India, particularly in cases where families allege delayed investigations or slow arrests following attacks.
