Morocco ranks 6th in Africa for public service delivery, AfDB report shows
New index highlights Morocco’s gains in inclusion, electrification, and infrastructure as model for African public sector performance
RABAT, Morocco (MNTV) — Morocco has been ranked sixth in Africa for public service performance, according to the inaugural Public Service Delivery Index (PSDI) released by the African Development Bank (AfDB), signaling strong progress in governance, infrastructure, and social inclusion.
The 2024 PSDI assesses the capacity of African countries to deliver essential public services by combining quantitative indicators with citizen perceptions.
Morocco earned a score of 55.22 out of 100, surpassing both the continental average of 45.39 and the North African regional average of 50.55, reported Morocco World News.
The report positions Morocco within the top 10% of African nations in terms of effective public service provision.
Mauritius topped the index, followed by Egypt and South Africa. Morocco’s ranking was driven by high scores in socioeconomic inclusion (63.30), industrial development (57.50), and access to electricity (55.87).
The report praised Morocco’s nearly universal electrification rate—98% of the population—achieved through decades of investment in rural electrification and infrastructure development.
The AfDB noted Morocco’s long-standing focus on renewable energy as a key contributor to its performance. With major solar and wind projects underway, the country has enhanced energy access while advancing sustainability goals.
Citizen feedback also reflected a generally high level of satisfaction with public services, reinforcing the credibility of these outcomes.
The PSDI identifies Morocco’s success as a product of sustained policy planning rather than isolated achievements.
The report highlighted the importance of long-term investment in infrastructure, social protection, and energy as pillars of public service reform.
While Morocco and a handful of countries have performed well, the broader index revealed persistent disparities across the continent.
Core sectors such as industrialization (40.19), food security (44.05), and regional integration (44.65) lagged behind. Nonetheless, improvements in energy (52.99) and social inclusion (48.61) suggest progress is possible through targeted reforms.
The AfDB emphasized that the PSDI is not merely a ranking tool, but a strategic instrument to inform national policy, support reform agendas, and provide measurable benchmarks for improving service delivery across Africa.
Morocco’s advancement, the report concluded, reflects the benefits of consistent development strategies and offers a roadmap for other African countries seeking to enhance governance, infrastructure, and public satisfaction.
