Mamdani urges Washington to act on ICC warrant for Netanyahu
Mayor said New York lacks authority to enforce arrest itself, and put the question to federal government, Trump says Netanyahu won't be detained
NEW YORK (MNTV) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called on the US government to act on the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after concluding that the city has no independent legal authority to enforce it.
Mamdani said his administration examined whether the NYPD could act on the warrant should Netanyahu visit for the UN General Assembly, and determined it could not.
The responsibility, he argued, sits with Washington.
That is where it stops.
The United States is not an ICC member and has long rejected the court’s jurisdiction over Americans and close allies, and President Donald Trump has said plainly that Netanyahu will not be arrested on US soil.
The warrants, issued in 2024 for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, concern alleged war crimes in Gaza, including the blockade that cut off essential supplies to the civilian population.
Mamdani’s position tracks a real shift in American opinion, with surveys showing sharpening criticism of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, particularly among younger voters and Democrats — a gap between what a growing share of the public thinks and what US policy does.
His intervention has drawn substantial support in New York and beyond, and sharpened the question of whether international law binds allies or only adversaries.
