Mamdani leads NYC mayoral race as Adams gains traction among Republicans, new poll finds
Queens Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani is leading the 2025 New York City mayoral race, according to a new poll released Monday
NEW YORK (MNTV) – Queens Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani is leading the 2025 New York City mayoral race, according to a new poll released recently by Data for Progress — while Mayor Eric Adams sees rising support from Republicans and former Governor Andrew Cuomo prepares for a possible independent bid.
The poll shows Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist who won the June Democratic primary, with 40% support among likely voters.
Cuomo, who is expected to re-enter the race as an independent after losing the primary, trails with 24%. Adams, now running on an independent line, stands at 15%, followed by Republican Curtis Sliwa at 14%. Independent attorney Jim Walden polled at just 1%, with 5% of voters undecided.
Mamdani also holds the highest favorability rating among all five candidates — and is the only one with a net positive score.
He polls at 49% favorable to 40% unfavorable, even outperforming the Democratic Party itself, which is evenly split at 49-49. Cuomo’s rating stands at 39-59, Adams at 29-70, Sliwa at 32-50, and Walden at 9-15, with many voters unfamiliar with him.
Mamdani’s decisive primary victory over Cuomo defied earlier projections.
While ranked-choice voting delayed the official result by a week, Cuomo conceded less than two hours after polls closed, recognizing Mamdani’s commanding early lead.
The general election field remains in flux. Cuomo is expected to formally announce his candidacy this week and may pledge to drop out if he is not the strongest challenger to Mamdani by early September.
That proposal, originally put forward by Walden, aims to consolidate support behind a single non-Mamdani contender.
Adams, meanwhile, is running a more centrist campaign following the dismissal of a five-count criminal indictment earlier this year. The poll indicates he is gaining traction among Republican voters and moderate Democrats.
Notably, several figures who supported Cuomo in the primary have since endorsed Mamdani.
