Maldives urges global sanctions over Israel’s genocide in Gaza
Maldives calls for coordinated political, economic and diplomatic sanctions against Israel at UN forum, citing genocide and rising Palestinian child deaths
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — The Maldives has called on the international community to impose comprehensive political, economic and diplomatic sanctions against Israel, urging sustained global pressure until Israel halts its genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and complies with international law.
The appeal was delivered during the third General Debate of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, where the Maldivian delegation presented a national statement condemning Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Palestinian territories.
According to the statement, Maldivian officials expressed alarm over the escalating humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, saying the conflict has devastated basic economic and social rights and inflicted severe suffering on Palestinian civilians.
The delegation highlighted the disproportionate impact of the war on children, warning that thousands of Palestinian minors have been killed or injured during Israel’s military assault on the Gaza Strip.
Maldives urged member states of the international community to take coordinated diplomatic action, including comprehensive sanctions, to compel Israel to end its military operations and respect international humanitarian law.
The government also pointed to domestic measures taken in response to the conflict. Authorities in the Indian Ocean island nation have introduced a national entry ban on Israeli passport holders, formally preventing Israeli citizens from entering the country.
Maldivian officials said the decision reflects growing international outrage over the destruction in Gaza and the mounting civilian death toll since Israel launched its genocidal war in October 2023.
In its statement, the Maldives said thousands of Palestinians have been killed during the ongoing assault, including a significant number of children, while large parts of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure have been destroyed.
Despite repeated international calls for ceasefires and humanitarian pauses, the Maldivian delegation said Israeli military operations have continued across Gaza and other Palestinian areas, worsening the humanitarian crisis and deepening the suffering of civilians.
The Maldives has increasingly used international diplomatic forums to advocate stronger action against Israel, arguing that sustained political pressure and sanctions are necessary to halt the violence and ensure accountability under international law.
