Maldives launches Quran memorization program with cash incentive
Local council to offer $9,750 to each certified Hafiz in bid to train new generation of Quran memorizers
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — A local island council in the Maldives has launched an ambitious initiative to increase the number of Quran memorizers, or Huffaz, by offering financial rewards and free religious education.
Officials from Huraa Island, located in Kaafu Atoll, announced that the council will award 150,000 Maldivian rufiyaa ($9,750) to each individual who successfully completes the memorization of the Quran and earns certification as a Hafiz.
The decision is part of a broader effort to address the absence of qualified religious leaders on the island, The Edition, a local news outlet, reported.
“There is currently no Hafiz on the island to lead prayers or serve as Imam,” said council member Hassan Firaash.
“We’re now working to bring in a Quran teacher to offer both general Quran and Hifz (memorization) classes free of charge. All costs will be covered by the council.”
Firaash added that permits have already been secured to begin the classes, and efforts are underway to recruit a qualified instructor.
The program is open to both schoolchildren and independent learners.
Anyone who completes the full Quran memorization, whether through the classes or on their own, will be eligible for the monetary reward.
“Our goal is to produce more Huffaz from our own island,” Firaash said.
“Even if we can train just three children a year, that will be a meaningful start.”
According to the National Centre for Holy Quran, the Maldives currently has 266 certified Huffaz, including 126 females and 140 males.
