Maldives begins Ramadan night prayers in prisons for first time
Maldives Correctional Service holds first official Taraweeh prayers in prisons as Ramadan observances expand to inmates
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — As Ramadan enters its opening days, the Maldives Correctional Service has begun officially conducting Taraweeh prayers inside prison mosques for the first time in the country’s history.
Authorities confirmed that nightly Ramadan prayers are now being held at Maafushi Prison and Asseyri Prison, the Maldives’ main correctional facilities. Qualified Huffaz — Muslims who have memorized the Quran — have been appointed to lead the congregational prayers.
Taraweeh prayers are special nightly prayers performed during Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting and spiritual reflection observed by Muslims worldwide.
Correctional officials said the initiative formalizes religious observance within detention centers and is intended to expand structured opportunities for worship during Ramadan. In addition to the prayers, religious awareness sessions are being conducted for convicted inmates and detainees awaiting trial.
According to the Correctional Service, the sessions focus on Islamic teachings and moral reflection, with the aim of supporting inmates’ spiritual and psychological well-being. Authorities said introductory programs welcoming Ramadan were also held inside the facilities.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs is supporting the effort by facilitating additional faith-based sessions designed to encourage ethical development and rehabilitation.
The Maldives, a Muslim-majority island nation in the Indian Ocean, integrates Islamic principles into public life and governance. Religious programming forms part of the country’s broader correctional rehabilitation framework, alongside vocational and skills-training initiatives.
Officials said ongoing rehabilitation efforts aim to help inmates reintegrate into society as constructive members following their release.
While religious activities have previously taken place in prisons on an informal basis, this marks the first time Taraweeh prayers are being organized under an official correctional framework during Ramadan.
