Latest Israeli attacks in Gaza displace nearly half a million Palestinians, UN says
Displaced families are increasingly seeking shelter in overcrowded areas with limited access to water, sanitation, and health services
NEW YORK, United States (MNTV) – The United Nations has reported a sharp surge in mass displacement across the Gaza Strip, with nearly half a million Palestinians forced from their homes amid escalating Israeli military operations.
Citing figures from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters that Israeli shelling and airstrikes “have continued across the strip,” driving civilians to flee in large numbers.
He said that since mid-August, almost 453,000 displacements have been recorded across Gaza, most of them from Gaza City. On Sunday alone, partners documented nearly 6,900 people moving from north to south through four monitoring points.
“Many people remain in Gaza City and the north, but many others continue to flee southward,” Haq said.
The UN also highlighted mounting barriers to aid delivery. Haq noted that for more than two weeks, neither the UN nor its partners have been able to deliver food aid through the Zikkim crossing into northern Gaza. “Only 18% of the Gaza Strip is not currently subject to displacement orders or located within militarized zones,” he warned.
Displaced families are increasingly seeking shelter in overcrowded areas with limited access to water, sanitation, and health services.
“People are seeking refuge in areas that are already lacking in basic services,” Haq said.
Despite ongoing humanitarian efforts, more than 40% of missions requiring Israeli coordination were denied, OCHA reported. While some medical supplies have been distributed in Deir al-Balah and small quantities of fuel collected from the Kareem Shalom crossing, water trucking operations remain blocked.
The UN reiterated its call for unimpeded humanitarian access and urgent measures to address Gaza’s worsening crisis.
