Kazakh students win gold at global math olympiad in Bulgaria

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (MNTV) — A team of young Kazakh students has brought home multiple medals, including gold, from the 12th International Olympiad “Mathematics Without Borders,” held in Nessebar, Bulgaria from June 28 to July 1.

According to a report by local media outlet El.kz, the Kazakh delegation—comprising eight school students—stood out among more than 1,000 participants representing 40 countries.

Leading the national team was Arlan Sakhanov, a 5th-grade student from School-Lyceum No. 72 in Astana, who earned a gold medal and was honored with the title “Math Star of the Tournament 2025” for his outstanding performance. He also secured a bronze medal in the team category.

Other notable achievements included 4th-grader Baizhan Moldagali from Semey, who won a silver medal individually and gold in the team round. Akylzhan Spandiyar, a 6th-grade student from Almaty, was awarded a silver in the individual category and a bronze in the team event. Fellow Almaty student Alina Nepsha, in 10th grade, received a bronze medal, while Islam Bissenaliev from Kulsary took bronze in the team category.

The Mathematics Without Borders Olympiad is held in three stages throughout the academic year, with the final round traditionally hosted in Bulgaria. Beyond competition, the event also promotes international friendship and the exchange of knowledge among young mathematicians.

Kazakhstan’s strong performance this year reflects the growing emphasis on STEM education and academic excellence in the country’s school system.
