Kazakh innovators develop AI robots for autism therapy and remote learning
Nazarbayev University engineer and a school student from Atyrau introduce pioneering robots praised internationally for education and therapy
ASTANA, Kazakhstan (MNTV) — New AI-driven robots developed in Kazakhstan are offering fresh approaches to therapy and education, with applications ranging from autism rehabilitation to remote learning.
According to Silk Way TV, an innovative therapy robot has been created by Nazarbayev University engineer Anar Sandygulova to support children with autism spectrum disorders. Work on the project began in 2018 at a children’s rehabilitation center in Astana, where researchers observed how a smart assistant should engage with young patients.
The robot encourages dialogue, maintains interaction at eye level, and helps children who struggle with eye contact build confidence.
Sandygulova, an associate professor in the university’s robotics department, explained that the robot is equipped with cameras to track smiles and eye contact while following structured lesson plans.
Activities range from storytelling to interactive games where children respond to commands such as “touch my head” or “touch my hand.” The project has received copyright protection in Kazakhstan, was showcased in Sweden to international praise, and is now seeking patents in the United States and European Union.
Innovation in robotics is not limited to universities. In Atyrau, high school student Bekarys Yerikuly has developed a mobile robot for remote education.
Controlled via smartphone over Bluetooth and connected to video calls through Wi-Fi, the device can conduct online lessons, display teaching materials, and move on command. Yerikuly says the robot could also support hospitals, government offices, and service centers.
He added that his goal is to integrate artificial intelligence to make the robot fully autonomous, potentially extending its service life to up to 10 years. “For schoolchildren and teachers, this is an opportunity to stay connected and hold lessons online,” Yerikuly said.
