Italy has reaffirmed its support for Rohingya refugees with a €2.5 million ($2.9 million) contribution to strengthen life-saving assistance
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AA) — Italy has reaffirmed its support for Rohingya refugees with a €2.5 million ($2.9 million) contribution to strengthen life-saving assistance and protection efforts in Bangladesh, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said Tuesday.
The funds, provided through Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its Directorate General for Migration Policies, will help sustain community-based protection programs, prevent gender-based violence, and enhance child protection and refugee registration.
Ivo Freijsen, UNHCR’s representative in Bangladesh, said the contribution “will help meet the most urgent needs of Rohingya refugees and provide vital protection against the challenges of life in the world’s largest refugee camp.”
More than 1.16 million Rohingya refugees live in overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar, relying entirely on humanitarian aid as global funding declines.
Most fled Myanmar’s 2017 military crackdown, while around 150,000 have arrived since early 2024 amid renewed violence and persecution in Rakhine State.
UNHCR warned that falling international funding threatens to reverse hard-won gains in refugee health, safety, and self-reliance, underscoring the importance of continued global support.
