Israeli forces enter southern Syria amid border tensions
Syrian state media reports fresh military incursion into Daraa as UN chief reiterates support for Syria’s territorial integrity
DAMASCUS, Syria (MNTV) — Israeli military forces carried out a new incursion into Syria’s southern Daraa province on Tuesday, according to Syrian state media, marking the latest reported cross-border operation since the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government last year.
Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that two Israeli tanks and a military vehicle crossed into the outskirts of Wadi Al-Raqad from the Tal Abu Al-Ghaithar area. The vehicles reportedly opened fire during the operation, although no casualties or property damage were reported.
The reported incursion follows similar operations in the neighboring province of Quneitra. Syrian media said Israeli forces entered the village of Western Samdaniyah on Sunday, detained a civilian during a raid on a home and later withdrew.
Additional Israeli troops were also reported to have advanced into parts of Daraa’s Yarmouk Basin, where they established a temporary checkpoint near Al-Ardah village.
According to Syrian state television, residents in the area also reported hearing shelling, while leaflets were distributed warning civilians not to obstruct the movement of Israeli military vehicles.
The Israeli military had not publicly commented on the reported operations at the time of publication.
Syrian authorities have repeatedly described the cross-border incursions as violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement governing the ceasefire line between Israel and Syria.
The developments coincided with a visit to Syria by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who reiterated that Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity must be respected.
He said violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement are unacceptable and called for an end to actions that undermine Syrian territorial integrity.
Israel has expanded its military presence in parts of southern Syria since the fall of the Assad government in December 2024, conducting repeated ground operations and airstrikes in areas near the border.
