Islamic teacher beaten, humiliated after dispute over fuel in India
Three men have been arrested after Islamic teacher was beaten at fuel station, where video shows his beard being pulled and skull cap thrown to ground
NEW DELHI, India (MNTV) — An Islamic teacher was beaten by several men who pulled his beard and threw his skull cap to the ground during an altercation at a fuel station in northern India, turning what began as a dispute over petrol into an assault that has drawn attention to the targeting of his visible Muslim identity.
The attack took place in Balrampur district of Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, after Maulana Iqbal, a teacher at an Islamic religious school, complained that he had received less petrol than he had paid for while refueling his motorcycle.
An argument with a fuel station worker followed before the confrontation became violent. Video that later circulated widely on social media shows Iqbal surrounded by several men and being repeatedly assaulted.
During the attack, the men can be seen pulling Iqbal’s beard and knocking or throwing his skull cap to the ground. Those actions have become central to anger over the incident because both are closely associated with his Muslim religious identity.
For many observant Muslim men, maintaining a beard carries religious significance, while the skull cap is a widely recognized expression of Muslim identity across South Asia.
Their apparent targeting during an otherwise ordinary commercial dispute has therefore raised questions about whether religious hostility became part of the assault.
Police have arrested three men identified as Lovkush Yadav, Himanshu Gupta and Mahesh Yadav.
Balrampur police said a criminal case had been registered and that legal proceedings against the three suspects were underway. Authorities have not publicly established that the assault was motivated by religious hatred.
The attack has nevertheless generated criticism online, particularly over how quickly a complaint about the amount of petrol dispensed escalated into several men physically attacking a customer.
The religious element has drawn particular scrutiny because attacks on visibly Muslim people have become an increasingly prominent concern in India, where rights groups have documented discrimination, hate speech and violence targeting the country’s roughly 200 million Muslims amid the rise of Hindu nationalism.
The incident occurred in Uttar Pradesh, governed by Hindu monk Yogi Adityanath, a prominent figure in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
The state has repeatedly faced scrutiny from rights advocates over the treatment of Muslims and other minorities.
Police are continuing their investigation into the confrontation, including the circumstances that led to the violence and the roles of those involved.
