Islamabad hosts critical US-Iran talks amid war, ceasefire hopes
Senior analyst says extension of ceasefire would mark key success despite deep divisions
By Ahmad Q.
ISLAMABAD (MNTV) — Senior security analyst Syed Muhammad Ali has expressed cautious optimism as high-stakes talks between the United States and Iran take place in Islamabad, saying limited progress remains possible despite entrenched differences.
āI think I am quite optimistic that these talks will yield some progress, but that does not mean that everything on the US or Iranian wish list will be immediately accepted by the other side,ā he told MNTV.
Ali described continuation or extension of the ceasefire as the minimum benchmark for success, arguing that even a temporary easing of hostilities would represent a meaningful outcome.
āFor me, the minimum notion of successful talks would be the continuation of the ceasefire; if it is extended, notwithstanding the public maximalist and aggressive posturing from both the Iranian and American sides, that in itself would be an achievement,ā he said.
He cautioned, however, that the disputes between the two sides remain deeply complex and would require sustained, expert-level negotiations before any comprehensive resolution could be achieved.Ā āThe issues both sides confront are complex and will take time,ā he said.
Ali identified the Strait of Hormuz as a potential area of convergence, highlighting Iranās strategic leverage over global energy flows.
āIranās main leverage lies in the global energy crisis, which is directly affected by its control of the Strait of Hormuz,ā he said, adding that any concession on this front would carry significant geopolitical costs for Iran.
He further said that Tehran is likely to expect Washington to use its influence over Israel to curb military operations in Lebanon, describing this as a key factor that could encourage Iranian flexibility.
āIran expects the US to exercise its influence over Tel Aviv to restrain Israelās military actions against Lebanon,ā he said.
Ali also described Pakistanās role in hosting the talks as a major diplomatic milestone, suggesting the initiative reflects Islamabadās unique position of trust with both sides.
āThis may be Pakistanās finest hour in international diplomacy,ā he said, pointing to the countryās rising profile following its response to the May 2025 conflict with India.
He said Pakistanās efforts to facilitate dialogue between the US and Iran demonstrate its credibility on the global stage.
āThis initiative to help secure a ceasefire between the worldās preeminent superpower and a major power of the Muslim world is an exceptional diplomatic achievement and demonstrates that Pakistan continues to enjoy trust in both Washington and Tehran,ā he said.
According to Ali, Pakistan has also received significant international backing for its mediation efforts, including outreach from dozens of world leaders.
āPakistan received calls from more than 40 world leaders in the past 48 hours expressing support for its efforts,ā he said.
