Iraqi taekwondo athlete Mahdi Ali secures bronze at Asian junior championship
Young fighter defeats top-ranked opponents, highlights Iraq’s growing presence in martial arts
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) — Iraqi taekwondo athlete Mahdi Ali earned a bronze medal at the Asian Junior Taekwondo Championship, marking a significant achievement for the country’s emerging sports talent.
According to the Iraqi National Olympic Committee, Ali advanced through a competitive field by defeating opponents from Japan and the Philippines before achieving a major upset against Thailand’s reigning world champion in a closely fought match.
His campaign concluded in the semi-finals after a narrow loss to a Turkmenistan competitor, securing him a place on the podium and adding to Iraq’s record in international martial arts competitions.
Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Iraqi Taekwondo Federation, praised Ali’s performance, calling him “a true champion in the making” with exceptional skill and determination.
He added that the broad participation of athletes from across Asia underscores the significance of Ali’s accomplishment and reflects the sport’s growing development in Iraq.
